Experimental composer James Bailey has been operating since the late '70s. His years collaborating with Urban Refuse Group, Six Heads and Odradek are many. These two pieces from the early '90s are long-form experiments with radio waves; the first is an enveloping mimimal drone obtained from isolated signals run through computer, the second a radio dial run deep into the ether. Bailey also created each individual cover himself by "drawing" onto heat-sensitive thermographic fax paper.

The final hunt and kills from the pow-wow trio of Randall Gagne, Bob McCully and yours truly, laid to tape in 2010 just before the band played what would turn out to be their final show. Recently remastered by James Kearns, this full-length commences full circle with a lone unreleased noise-drone warrior recorded in the first days of the group, before Randy joined the tribe. A coda of sorts from a stage of primitive early man that burned out long before it could fade away.

Two continually thriving players in Toronto's whirlwind improv scenes, Colin Fisher and Brandon Valdivia have been pushing their like-minded arrays of musical skills and visions through the roof both together in this long-running duo, and with virtually every open-minded musician under our city's sun. Notably, FIsher has done major time touring as part of Caribou's backing band, and Valdivia is a long-standing member of chamber-folk group Picastro. This was a Tour Disk for the NTWNTF Autumn 2012 Canadian West Coast tour, and it finds the duo of challenging percussionists and multi-instrumentalists erupting with rock's volcanos, and meditating with jazz's spirits, in three peaceful long-form work-outs.

Off-the-cuff jams from ages long past (the early '80s?) by an anonymous presumed-to-be-duo. No vocals, all groovin' and movin' from what sounds like a clean bass guitar and a Lowery organ with heavy beat-box capabilities. Very little information concerning this one, but if you listen you can tell these modest improvisers were probably inspired by the likes of Young Marble Giants, Public Image Ltd., and Cluster while they were working these Touches out. Primal, timeless lo-fi fun.

Recorded one night onto a 90-minute cassette while under the influence of heavy fever, this double album affair is not for the faint of heart, nor the sensitive of hearing. It's noisy, brazenly lo-fi, deconstructed, and gloriously alive like only improvised ritual music can be. Consider it an anti-opera for coughing conductor, busted amplifier, bass effects, and random objects. A gang with strong ears and minds for the classics of rock, folk and literature, Voidfolk rolled their epic, poignant and articulate songs onto tape with James Anderson at 6 Nassau in Kensington Market. The meeting couldn't have struck a better match. The band's refined fire is burning brightly in the tight-knit, home-spun hard-rock splendor of Inyrdisk' favourites like "Revolution Man" and "Widow Night." Spearheaded by the band's own Jazz Giraffe label (also home to Oil Giant, the Voidfolk extended-family improv group), this debut LP would do well to dwell on your mind.

(iyd69) WOLFSKULL Mighty Ungodly Change

Increasingly prolific and always damaged Dunedin, New Zealand troupe of rock deconstructionists featuring Clayton Noone of Armpit, CJA, Futurians, and much fine history. This release is quite removed from most Wolfskull out there, a single 42-minute trance cycle without a drum in sight that's gushing with moving space, ritualistic group chants, psych-rock guitar undercurrents, and hallucinogenic waves of endlessly reverberating vibes. The experience of perpetual change in sound, and collage art by yours truly.

The pride of Dunedin? Inyrdisk is right ripped to be releasing the latest in a run of archival Armpit editions. This one, according to founding member Clayton Noone, came out as a one-sided C60 in an edition of 3 on Plop Recordings. It's maybe their third release, from 1992 or '93, not too long after these noise-rock rowdies struck it up. This remastered 25-minute collage of blasted lo-fi tape experiments and jet-fueled out-rock anti-jams kick and stagger with the finest of the era. You won't wake up angry if you stumble home drunk with this.

Inyrdisk has long wanted to do a split CD-R, so when some tapes by Birmingham, U.K. grime-noise newbie Blue Spectrum raised to mind Hamilton, Ontario's prolific scuzz mavens Fossils, it became clear what needed to go down: 20 minutes from each side of the Atlantic. It could be nicked the "Double Hammer" split, and both projects (Blue Spectrum being a solo affair, and Fossils being here the duo of Payne and Farr) definitely brought their biggest hammers to this party. Gastric Female Reflex halver and Beniffer Editions head honcho Jacob Horwood has only thrown the underground the rare curveball over the years when it comes to releasing and performing solo music. His 2007 release on Inyrdisk, and the two pieces compiled here are Horwood's lone solo recordings outside of a live split CD-R on Beniffer. Winkie's "Rey" was previously released in '06 upon a tiny run split cassette by LSD OTB, and "The Way Things Go" was meant for an unreleased cassette in '08, and remastered for this edition. Quality, not quantity, is Winkie's key to cut-up electronics. Eye-tickling artwork by Michael DeForge!

(iyd73) MAGIC CHEEZIES Live Bootleg

2009 was the year Magic Cheezies stormed Toronto stages with their hit it and quit it pop-punk fury. With Heather Curley (ex-DD/MM/YYYY) kicking out the guitar and vocals, Mark McLean (ex-Sick Lipstick, Induced Labour) bashing in the drums, and yours truly holding down the bass, we were a joyful noise to be reckoned with. By 2010 the group had shifted with Mark playing bass and a new fellow on drums, but plans to record were scrapped and the band called it quits after a few shows. This tape is the only document, from one of the original trio's next to final gigs, and what it lacks in fidelity it captures in feverish energy.

Australian export of choice xNoBBQx have been grilling up the noise-rock tasties for a good many years now with their deconstructed and destructive take on the guitar and drums duo. Matthew Earle's guitar cries and begs when it's not rioting and looting, and Nick Dan's drums sound like they're rolling around in the back of a van when they're not ganging up to get in on a beat-down. These two drastically different live sets from as many nights in Beijing, during a recent tour of China (the unbridled insanity of XP, and the strangulated tension of Hot Cat), go together like open flames and marinated kabobs.

London, Ontario's best kept secret could be Teresa Daniele.
